Salal, San Juan Community Home Trust

The Salal project was an affordable housing preservation project to fund roof replacements on six units in the Salal permanent affordable neighborhood in Friday Harbor, San Juan Island. The houses were supplied in 2004 by a now defunct Canadian manufacturer which installed 15 year shingles in error instead of the 20-25 year materials ordered. The low-income homeowners in this neighborhood were in danger of having serious structural damage to their homes due to an error by a company which was no longer around to rectify the situation.

San Juan County stepped in to help fund the replacement of these failing roofs with new Energy Star metal roofing with a 40-70 year lifespan. The project was completed in 2019. San Juan County is dedicated to not only creating new affordable housing opportunities for San Juan County residents, but preserving existing affordable housing with long term restrictions wherever possible so that it can continue serving our community for decades to come.
